IMDB score 8.2/10

  • When: Tuesday, January 14th 2014
  • Where: Stirling Arms Hotel (117 James st, Guildford)
  • Time: 6 pm for food and drinks, 7 pm screening (entry by donation)

Synopsis
“The Clean Bin Project is about a regular couple and their quest to answer the question ‘is it possible to live completely waste free?’ Partners Jen and Grant go head to head in a comedic battle to see who can swear off consumerism and produce the least amount of garbage in an entire year. Their light-hearted competition is set against a compelling examination of the sobering problem of waste in our ‘throw-away’ society. Featuring interviews with renowned artist and TED lecturer, Chris Jordan and marine pollution expert, Captain Charles Moore, The Clean Bin Project presents the serious topic of waste reduction with optimism, humour, and inspiration for individual action.” via IMDB

Crafty Devils Christmas Special

Are you feeling festive? Or do you need some inspiration to get into the holiday spirit? Then wander down to the Crafty Devils Christmas Special on Saturday, December 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Guildford Mechanics Hall to join in the fun.

Even if the mainstream “silly season” traditions aren’t your style, there is certainly opportunity to learn new ways of promoting low-impact gift giving (for any time of year), unique “upcycled” craft or present ideas, and just a lovely chance to meet and chat with some other local creative people.

Men and women of all ages and creative disciplines are welcome, but please leave the babies/kids/pets at home. (bring your friends & neighbours too!) There will be a festive holiday tea, and if anyone would like to contribute their own trademark treat that would also be lovely.

Ho-ho-hope to see you there!

Do you know what your money is doing?

Innovative research in 2009 by climate scientists asked the question, ‘How much carbon can we still burn and have a reasonable chance of staying below 2 degrees?’. The answer was, not much more.

And further work has calculated there are already enough fossil fuel reserves identified to cook the planet 5 times over! So the concept of unburnable carbon and fossil fuel divestment was born. As Bill McKibben says

If it’s wrong to wreck the climate, then surely it’s wrong to profit from that wreckage”

So we’re co-hosting a Divestment forum to ask – What can Divestment offer our Climate, Communities and Economy?
