Paddling with the Wind

img_8273

It was a fierce wind that greeted us on Sunday morning at Garratt Road Bridge. Undaunted (and helped by the fact the wind was behind us) we lined up in our canoes for our trip up river to Ascot Kiosk. This kiosk has become a favourite with us, serving delicious breakfasts in a lovely setting beside the river.

It was a capable team of canoeists and we  made good progress, everyone managing to steer the canoes with the following wind. It was a quiet day for other boat traffic on the river, the less hardy being put off by the blustery conditions.

The sky changed several times during the trip, from blue to dark grey with threatening clouds.

However, there appeared to be no arguments in the boats and I heard no complaints about tiredness!

We arrived at Garvey Park in time for a delicious mid morning breakfast after which we decided it would be prudent to drive back to the cars as by now the wind was reaching gale force, or so it seemed to us! Another delightful morning on the river with Guildford Outdoors.

Our next Guildford Outdoors event will be a social bike ride, stopping again for brunch at our favourite kiosk! Places are limited, so you will need to register for the bike ride via eventbrite: https://lycra-free-bike-ride-garratt-bridge.eventbrite.com.au

Hiking the Bibbulmun

The forecast was rain, with possible hail and it was decidedly cold. I guess that was why there were only three of us heading up to Mundaring to hike the Bibbulmun track on the Guildford Outdoors excursion.  This is how it started…

We crossed the weir and headed up the track. It began to rain lightly and so after a few minutes we put our rain jackets on. That caused it to stop immediately and we saw no more rain for the rest of the day. The bush was alive after the rain and the flowers are beginning to appear. The hovea’s bright purple and the hibbertia’s  bright yellow enlivened the bush.

Morning tea was on a delightful granite outcrop, where we basked like lizards.

We walked to the Hewitt’s Hill campsite where we ate our lunch and enjoyed the company of another walker.

It was a pleasant walk back to Mundaring weir. We felt we’d exercised and rejuvenated our spirits with a few hours in nature. Wish you’d joined us?

This was an excursion run as part of the Guildford Outdoors group within Transition Town Guildford. For details of our next event, check out the Transition Town Guildford Facebook page or sign up for our e-newsletter.

Ever considered walking the Bibbulmun track? Come learn about how you can walk sections of it at our next Bright Idea’s talk called “Walking the Bibbulmun Track”. To register, visit: www.walk-the-track.eventbrite.com.au

Preparing the Verge for Autumn Planting….

Cristinas 2

On Sunday a small team of vergers gathered in Bassendean early to tackle a narrow weedy verge and avoid the great heat of the day. In just over an hour the weeds were dug out,  wet newspaper was spread and the mulch was heaped on top covering the area. The Bassendean  Council were very helpful and assisted by placing part of the mulch on the footpath for easy access on the Friday and placing signage along the footpath for pedestrians. It was a breeze and the visual impact is amazing.

Now the area is ready to be “bombed” with the everlasting bombs we made at our last workshop. As soon as May arrives…

Our verge gardening group  meets about every 3 weeks to tackle someone’s verge. If you would like to be part of it, contact Pam on pamela.riordan@gmail.com
